Kenyan Safari

We had an amazing time on our week long safari in Kenya! In addition to seeing more animals than we had even hoped for, we stayed in some incredible places and saw some beautiful countryside. The week got off to a bit of a rough start with Chris being sick for our free day in Nairobi, followed by a couple of days of stomach troubles during the first days of the safari. After seeing a doctor, he started to mend quickly.
The itinerary was as follows:
Day 1 and 2: Samburu National Park (in the Samburu Serena Lodge)
Day 3: Kenya National Park (Serena Mountain Lodge)
Day 4: Lake Baringo (Baringo Club)
Day 5: Lake Nakuru (Sarova Lion Hill Lodge)
Day 6 and 7: Masai Mara (Mara Simba Lodge)
With the exception of Baringo Club, we were staying in luxury at these lodges. An unexpected surprise for the both of us! We ended up eating way too much as every meal was a buffet of gorgeous food (including, oddly enough some of the best Indian food I’ve ever eaten!).
Our guide William (who was excellent) told us that we were very lucky to see some of the animals that we saw. Among the most impressive: rhinos mating (an odd sight let me tell you!!); lions mating about 10 feet from us; a python strangling a poor little jackal; three cheetahs chowing down on a fresh kill (hyenas and vultures waitng in the wings for a chance at some leftovers); and a funny close encounter between me, a civet monkey and a tray of cookies. Aside from those, we saw all of the “Big Five” - elephants, buffalo, leopards, lions and rhinos; lots of antelopes of varying kinds; hyenas; thousands of flamingoes at Lake Nakuru; baboons; colobus monkeys, etc.
The parks were all gorgeous and very different from one another. We also visited a Samburu tribe’s village, which was amazing. Driving through Kenya there are many contrasts of old and new, and many of the people you see live village lives that appear to have changed very little over the generations.
that’s all for now. We have arrived in Zanzibar and are on our way for Sundowners at a local bar!
More soon, hope all is well at home.
